Chapter 32
The last six months with Kendra have been amazing. I wish I had been ready to have a relationship like this a decade ago, but it doesnât matter now. I have the rest of my life to focus on. A life with less guilt and self-sabotage.
Weâre to the point that our dates arenât really defined times to schedule and arrange. Itâs just assumed that we will spend most of our time together outside of work. Sure, we still do specific things like take her dog for walks, go to movies, and the occasional weekend trip, but we usually stay close to home. Am I officially old? I donât feel old. I feel like Iâve got an entire life to go out and lead.
Kendra worked a twelve-hour shift today but I was off. Iâm envious of her twelve-hour work schedule as it allows for more days off, but Iâm not sure that I could make serious decisions for twelve hours straight. My mind is shot after only six hours on busy shifts.
I had a bottle of wine opened and properly aerated by the time she knocked once and entered my condo. A slight chill followed her in the doorway, but the heat of her body overpowered it. Goosebumps on top of goosebumps.
I handed her a stemless glass of wine and cleared a spot next to me on the couch. âI only have one more EMDR session left with Trevor. Can you believe that?â
âThatâs great, Alex. Youâre such a different person now. Your self-confidence is really showing at the hospital. Supposedly, it makes you more of âa catchâ. At least thatâs what the other nurses are telling me.â
âOh, youâre talking about me with the other nurses, are you?â
âYes, and it feels great. Before theyâd just complain about you. Now, some of them seem jealous that weâre together.â
âAs well they should be. Iâm definitely a catch.â I clinked my wine glass against hers and placed it against my lips, inhaling the aroma of the wine before taking a sip.
âThatâs a perfect example. You would never have made that comment six months ago. You would have told me how youâre broken and not worth dating. That I should go find someone worthy of me.â
âI chose the more difficult option. I decided to make myself worthy of you. Well, I had some help. Trevor and Delroy played a big role in identifying my problems and helping me get past them.â
âSo this EMDR thing is really helping? It sounds like voodoo to me.â
She wasnât wrong. I thought that at first, too. Maybe there is some placebo component, but itâs working better than anything else has worked before, so Iâm going to roll with it. Trevor is a miracle worker.
âI know it does, but you canât argue with success. Iâm telling you, I feel so much better about what happened. Itâs like I can finally accept it wasnât all my fault and I was part of an unfortunate accident. Deep down, I think I always knew that, but I wouldnât allow myself to believe it.
